Each year since 1977, International Council Of Museums (ICOM) has organised International Museum Day (IMD), which represents a unique moment for the international museum community. The objective of IMD is to raise awareness of the fact that, “Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples.” IMD was celebrated for the first time 40 years ago. All around the world, more and more museums participate in International Museum Day. Last year, more than 37,000 museums participated in the event in about 158 countries and territories. The Castle of Good Hope is a participant in this initiative.
International Museum Day 2019 will focus on the new roles of museums as active actors in their communities “Museums as Cultural Hubs: The future of tradition”. The role of museums in society is changing. Museums keep reinventing themselves in their quest for becoming more interactive, audience focused, community oriented, flexible, adaptable and mobile. They have become cultural hubs functioning as platforms where creativity combines with knowledge and where visitors can also co-create, share and interact.
This year, IMD is on Saturday 18 May 2019 and the Castle of Good Hope is offering FREE entry to all visitors! Bring your family and friends and spend the day exploring the Castle, its history and its rich cultural heritage. We look forward to seeing you all here.
